Description:

This scenery completely redoes the main terminal and hangar area at the Tahiti airport, near the city of Papaeete, and it adds a second sea plane airport near the center of the island. It also includes larger turn out areas for large jetliners, a boat dock at the main airport, complete with a regatta out in the ocean. The sea plane base is in a secluded cove complete with a terminal, heliport, luxury hotel, and Tahitian style village.

Installation:

1. Extract the file into a temporary folder named whatever you like. Open the folder and move the folder within, named Tahiti to the scenedb folder within the main FS2002 folder.

2. Start up FS2002 and go to the World tab and click on it, then go down to the Scenery Library and click on it. Then click on Add Area, and find the scenedb folder and open it. Find the Tahiti folder and click on it. The name Tahiti should appear in the title window, then click OK. Tahiti should now appear at the top of the list in your Scenery Library, then click OK again, and it will begin to install. You will now have the scenery, but the old airport needs to be removed.

3.You now need to go into your main FS2002 folder and find the main scenery config. file. Open the main FS2002 folder and you will find several folders with names like gauges, aircraft, texture etc. scroll down past all the folders, and you will come to some icons, keep scrolling down till you see some notebook icons, and the one labeled scenery is the main scenery config. file. Click on it to open, and you will see listed different area numbers, and layer numbers for each area within FS. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the list which is where Tahiti should be since you just installed it. Then just copy and paste the following exclude line directly under the last line of the Tahiti section.

Exclude=S17 33.4,W149 36.68,S17 33.75,W149 36.22,objects

Go back into FS2002 at the Tahiti airport, and you should have the new scenery without the old airport showing through. Enjoy flying in French Polynesia!

Notes:

This Island group, which consists of some of the most beautiful islands in the world has not been very accurately depicted in FS2002, and I would welcome anyone who is adept at terrain mesh to do a number on these islands, as they are sadly in need of it. Orlando Sotomayer, where are you? I have encountered the same bumpy tarmacs and taxiways in this area that I did when doing my Lanai, Hawaii scenery. This was also present in the default airport before I started the scenery, and I believe it has something to do with the elevations in FS. This airport lies just a few feet above sea level, which may account for this. The scenery has very acceptable frame rates, so the only object I have enabled the user to exclude is the static aircraft. This can be done by putting your scenery density slider to normal, and once you move it to dense, the static aircraft will reappear. I did this only for those who want every possible area to put A1 aircraft.

Sea Plane airport location:

If you take off from the main Tahiti airport, and head around the island you will find a break towards the center of the island with a cove in it. The sea plane airport is located within this cove, and is complete with night lighting for those tour flights which have run a little longer than expected. You will also find several tour busses in the parking lot waiting to take your passengers to their designated hotels, or they can stay at the beautiful luxury hotel adjacent to the sea plane airport. This airport is in coral reef areas, so light sea planes are the rule here. I have found the Canuck to be the most desireable aircraft for this location, and it is available at SurClaro under the name of canuck80.zip, and is produced by Bill Lyons. I find myself flying into Tahiti, only to take off again, and head for that secluded cove to my favorite hotel to overnight until my next days flight. To visit the outer Islands of the French Polynesia chain just fly due west out of Tahiti.

Credits:

Marco Kavcic, for the time he took to create the beautiful graphics for this, and my previous scenery areas, and also for his inspiration to create the sea plane airport.
The same usual credits go out to Gerd Winterfeld for his great tropical palm collection, and John de Langristin for the newly found bamboo piers I used here, and the hut village at the sea plane base, also Mike Wallace for his best static aircraft. Then there is a special thanks to John Vrbanac for his helipads that I used at the sea base. He couldn't have put these out at a better time, since they were just what I was looknig for.
